Book Release Function-2015

Release of “The Religious-Philosophical Dimensions”

The new book “The Religious-Philosophical Dimensions” edited by Dr. Merina Islam was released at “ Des Haryana Book Stall in Geeta Jayanti Mahotasava, Kurukshetra on 20^th December, 2015 by Prof. Subhash Chander, Professor, Department of Hindi, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. Prof. Subhash Chander and Dr. Desh Raj Sirswal shared their views. This book contains 15 research papers of 2^nd Online Session of SPPIS Haryana on “The Development of Philosophy in India” held in June 2014 and it is published by Centre for Positive Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies (CPPIS) Pehowa (Kurukshetra). In this event several academic, non-academic scholars were present.

Report on World Philosophy Day-2015

The Departments of Philosophy and Hindi, P.G.Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh celebrated World Philosophy Day on 19th November, 2015. Dr. Anita Kaushal, the Principal of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh gave a floral welcome to the speaker. Dr. Anita Khosla, Head, Department of Hindi introduced the distinguished speaker. She mentioned that the present year being celebrated as 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and such kind of lecture is a valuable step towards introducing students about the life and philosophy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Prof. Subhash Chander (Department of Hindi, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra) delivered his lecture on “Social Philosophy of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.”

In his lecture he said that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is one of the most eminent intellectual figures of modern India. He remained in the forefront of all social, economic, political and religious efforts for upliftment of the lowest stratum of the Indian society known as untouchables, women and other backward classes. He was a great scholar who made outstanding contributions as an economist, sociologist, legal luminary, educationist, journalist, parliamentarian and above all, as a social reformer and champion of human rights. He developed a socio-ethical philosophy and steadfastly stood for human dignity and freedom, socio-economic justice, material prosperity and spiritual discipline. Dr. Ambedkar had also given lot of emphasis on getting education. He said that, “Educate, Organize and Agitate”. Here he had given prime importance to education. He further added that the backward classes have come to realize that after all education is the greatest material benefit for which they can fight. We may forego material benefits of civilization but we cannot forego our rights and opportunities to reap the benefits of the highest education to the fullest extent. That the importance of this questions from the point of view of the dalits and backward classes who have just realized that without education their existence is not safe. Dr. Ambedkar suffered a lot due to this caste system. Still in that system of discrimination, he succeeded to well educate himself. He showed the enlightening path for Indian society via his ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity and made India a democratic country. The role Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played has left its imprint on the Indian society and is still shaping the social, educational, political affairs and motivating our lives. Perhaps none of this would have been possible if it was not for the constant struggle Dr. Ambedkar waged and the vision he embedded in the Constitution of India. We should try to read, think and work according to the noble ideas of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideas.

In this program, a poster published by the “The Positive Philosophy Society” of the college and following three lectures published by the Centre for Positive Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies (CPPIS) Pehowa (Kurukshetra) were released by the Principal and distinguish guests: 1. “Values and Society: Value and Society: Re-discovering the Primacy of Cultural Context” by Prof. Geeta Manaktala 2. “Values with reference to Sikhism” by Dr. Paramvir Singh 3. “Our Environment, Our Responsibility” by Dr. Sudhir Baweja All the above-mentioned lectures were delivered in ICPR “Periodical Lectures” organized by Departments of Philosophy and Hindi held on 11th February 2015.

This programme had an interactive session in the end and students discussed on various concepts related to the lecture like casteism, reservation, Indian society and got clarification from the speaker. In the end of the program Dr. Desh Raj Sirswal, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy has expressed the vote of thanks and pointed out that the present lecture is a significant step to teach and acquaint students with the key concepts of the social philosophy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. About 60 students and faculty-members of the college have attended this lecture.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is one of the most eminent intellectual figures of modern India. He appeared on the Indian socio-political scene in early 1920s and remained in the forefront of all social, economic, political and religious efforts for upliftment of the lowest stratum of the Indian society known as untouchables, women and other backward classes. He was a great scholar who made outstanding contributions as an economist, sociologist, legal luminary, educationist, journalist, parliamentarian and above all, as a social reformer and champion of human rights. We can see his vastness of his vision in the ‘preamble’ to the Constitution of India. It may be considered as the soul of Constitution. The preamble can be referred to as the preface which highlights the essence of the entire Constitution. It was adopted on 26 November, 1949 by the Constituent Assembly and came into effect from 26th January, 1950. These are the opening words of the preamble to the Indian Constitution.

“WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, have solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

 JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

 LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

 EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do

HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.”

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar emerged as a powerful jurist, political leader, Buddhist activist, philosopher, thinker, anthropologist, historian, orator, prolific writer, economist, scholar, editor, revolutionary and a revivalist for Buddhism in India. He was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharatratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1990. So, the present seminar is an attempt to critically evaluate the relevance of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision and mission in present scenario and to prepare an extensive vision and mission document for the times to come. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideas, writings and outlook could well be characterized as belonging to that trend of thought called Social Humanism. He developed a socio-ethical philosophy and steadfastly stood for human dignity and freedom, socio-economic justice, material prosperity and spiritual discipline. He showed the enlightening path for Indian society via his ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity and made India a democratic country.

Objectives of the Programme:

The objective of the programme as follows:

To promote the ideas on social, economic, political, religious, human rights & constitutional reforms by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
To make the new generation aware about Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s ideas on social justice/equity/national integration and women empowerment.
To explore the potentiality in Ambedkarism in Literature to strengthen the society and Indian national spirit.

Call for Papers:

Research papers are invited from faculty members and research scholars on the thrust areas of the seminar or any other related topic as per the suggested format:

Format of Submission:

The paper should be typewritten preferably in Times New Roman in 12 font size (English) or Kruti Dev (10) in 14 font size (Hindi) single spacing in MS-Word format and between 2500 to 3000 words.
The abstract/summary of not more than 150-200 words, mentioning Title, Name, Designation and Contact details of the authors should be accompanied with the paper.
The authors should submit the hard copy along with a CD and a certificate of originality of the paper to be sent to the college address.

Time Line:

Abstract Submission: December 31, 2015.

Full Paper: January 10, 2016.

Report on Teachers’ Day Celebration-2015

The Positive Philosophy Society of the Department of Philosophy, P. G. Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organized an event on “Teachers’ Day Celebration –cum- Get-Together” on 3^rd September, 2015. The details of the function are given below:

Nidhi Semwal and Ms. Roshni coordinated the function. Ms. Nidhi introduced the Positive Philosophy Society with its objectives and also about the importance of Teachers’ Day celebration. She said this programme is dedicated to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam ji. Ms. Arnika Yumnam addressed new students by sharing her experience as well as guides them regarding the college life.
Two posters on Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam were inaugurated by The Positive Philosophy Society and Centre for Positive Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies (CPPIS) respectively. Ms. Kanika Mehta and Ms. Manisha Joshi shared the message of Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam for youth and teachers.
The following students were selected for the working committee for the session 2015-16: President: Ms. Arnika Yumnam (BA-III), Vice-President: Nidhi Semwal (BA-II), Secretary: Ms. Aanya (BA-I). Associate Members: Ms. Bhanu Priya (BA-I), Ms. Roshni (BA-II), Ms. Sharandeep Kaur (BA-III).
Shavnam, Ms. Arnika Yumnam, Ms. Manju and Ms. Manisha Joshi honoured for their excellent score in BA. Final, BA Second and BA First Year examinations (2014-2015) respectively.
An interactive session with new students also held. Students shared their views and performed some entertainment activities, as directed by senior students. Some senior students also performed singing and dancing activities.
Teacher-Incharge, Dr. Desh Raj Sirswal encouraged students to write and explore their thinking through creative initiatives. He also motivated them for quality learning and better academic engagements.
On this occasion a welcome party too given to B.A. First year students by senior students. A special thanks to Ms. Nidhi Semwal, Ms. Roshni, Ms. Arnika Yumnam and other students for their valuable efforts and contributions to made this event successful.
