About the Scholar:

Born in Meerut (near Delhi) in 1924, Daya Krishna is a leading figure of the academic Indian philosophy of the 20th century. A creative writer, he shaped the debates on the relation between Indian and Western philosophy during that period, and the relation between contemporaneity and tradition for Sanskrit philosophies. He published around 20 books and 200 articles, mostly in English but also in Hindi, touching upon all domains of philosophy, as well as the social sciences, economy and politics.  Key aspects of his philosophy are:

  • • Rereading Classical Indian Sources: Krishna emphasized the importance of reinterpreting classical Indian texts in a new light, rather than simply accepting traditional interpretations.
  • • Samvad Project: He initiated a dialogue between traditional Pundits and modern scholars, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of Indian philosophy .
  • • Social and Political Theory:  Krishna developed a new social and political theory for India, emphasizing freedom, autonomy, and self-rule (Svaraj).

Krishna’s work has inspired a new generation of philosophers, encouraging them to think creatively and critically about Indian philosophy. His emphasis on dialogue and self-reflection has contributed significantly to the field of Indian philosophy. Visit to know more about the scholar: https://www.dayakrishna.org
